FAQ Campanula

Q: I think that I am watering my pot plants too much. How can I find the best water balance for my plants?

A: It is always a good idea to read the care instructions that you find on the plant label that comes with your plant. We have tried to make the advice on the labels as good as possible to give you maximum enjoyment of your pot plants. As regards watering, it is very important that you always check first how dry or how damp the compost is. Then it is in fact very easy: if the compost is still damp from the last watering, you do not need to water the plant. If the compost is dry, give it a drop of water.

Q: I would like to plant my Campanulas in the garden. What should I do to ensure that they flower again next year, if they do so at all?

A: Campanula is a perennial plant. So you can easily plant it outside, nature does the rest! It will flower naturally in May/June and again in September/October if it is planted outside the year before. If you bought the Campanula in the spring (and kept it indoors), you can easily plant it outside when it has finished flowering. Remove all the old flower heads and old leaves and plant it in the garden in a sunny or semi-shady spot. A Campanula Addenda® that has overwintered can best use a little fertiliser in the early spring. That is when it will be ‘hungry' after a long, wet winter. Any specialist garden centre will have a range of suitable fertilisers for "container plants or flowering patio plants". Ask your specialist about this.

Q: Can Campanula Addenda® ‘Blue Sky' stand among roses and is it a good ground cover plant?

A: It will do well among roses. ‘Blue Sky' remains a ball-shaped plant and makes few shoots. You can only cover the ground by planting several ‘Blue Sky's'. There are however types that are more suitable for this.

Q: Our Campanula has finished flowering and no longer has any lovely purple flowers.

A: The natural flowering of Campanula Addenda® normally starts around the end of May. You can expect a 2nd natural flowering around mid September.

Q: When and how can I prune my Campanula Addenda®?

A: After the flowering period at the end of June break off the old leaves and all the flower tendrils at the base (do not cut or prune). This base will then shoot out again and in September flower naturally for the second time.

Q: We have pleasure from our Campanula Addenda® 'Blue Star' the whole summer. How often should I water it?

A: Campanula likes normal, continuous moisture. So on average watering a few times a week is enough in warm weather. In cooler weather water less. After flowering, feed with fertiliser weekly.

Q: Our Campanula Addenda® is in a trough. Can it overwinter?

A: This plant is winter hardy and comes into flower naturally the next year in May. Make sure that the trough does not get too wet. A Campanula does not like this.

Q: The leaves of our Campanula Addenda® are curling. Is that normal?

A: Your plant is probably too dry or there is too much direct sunlight.

Q: Is Campanula Addenda® winter hardy?

A: In the open ground or in a trough Campanula will remain healthy until the next year, provided it is not too wet. In May it begins to flower again.

Q: How high does Campanula Addenda® become?

A: On average 15 to 20 cm.
